We're all caught up & How are you getting on?

James Hankey

We’re all caught up and How are you getting on? were created by artist James Hankey for From the Field, a series of online commissions devised as a response to the worldwide pandemic in 2020. For his commission, James produced two moving image works reflecting on experiences of caring for his partner’s father Roy, who developed rapid onset dementia during the first lockdown. Roy is a recently retired art teacher and an accomplished woodworker, so one of the activities he and James embarked on together was the creation of a solitary bee tower. Now in a care home, Roy’s choices are not only dictated by his cognitive capacity, but also by the limitations of being in a care home during the era of Covid-19. You can view the video works We’re all caught up and How are you getting on? below.

FROM THE FIELD ANTHOLOGY
Each artist also produced a small physical edition to sit alongside their digital work. These art objects were brought together to make up the From the Field anthology; a compilation of reflections and creations instigated by the global pandemic. Some of the editions are still available to purchase directly from us via our online store Field Notes Editions or from The Shoppery in Penryn. 50% of the purchase price goes straight to the artist and any remaining profit towards a fund for future commissions.

One of the activities James and Roy undertook together involved building a solitary bee tower. James made 20 subtly different rubbings from cells of the bee tower, contributing the numbered and signed editions of these to the From the Field anthology, click on the images below to see the incredible detail full screen. You can watch the corresponding video work How are you getting on? above.

FUNDERS AND PARTNERS
From the Field was a programme of artist commissions produced by Field Notes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the course of 2020 from the first lockdown onwards, ten artists were commissioned to create something quick and reflective to be shared online. We had worked with nearly all of the artists prior and therefore chose to reach out to them as a barometer for the times. Each artist also produced a small physical edition to sit alongside their digital work.

From the Field was made possible by a grant from the Arts Council England Emergency Fund.
